BREASTFEEDING – a good start together
AABREASTFEEDING - a good start together aims to develop and test a breastfeeding programme that is supposed to contribute to increase the duration of breastfeeding, strengthen the parents' breastfeeding self-efficacy. The project has a particular focus on the social inequality in relation to breastfeeding. The programme is based on the parents' needs and is supposed to ensure consistency between the support the parents receive at the maternity hospital and in the municipalities.
Many new mothers stop breastfeeding earlier than they had planned. The Danish Health Authority recommends full breastfeeding until the child is about six months old. However, only approximately 60 percent of all children nationwide are fully breastfed for four months, and 12 percent are fully breastfed for 6 months. The project "BREASTFEEDING - a good start together" will help change that.
Breastfeeding - a good start together is a further development of the project "Breastfeeding - a secure start", which was carried out as a PhD study by the Resource Center for Breastfeeding from 2012-16. The new project will take place in primary health care and 20 municipalities in the Region of Southern Denmark and the North Denmark Region have agreed to participate in the project.
The participating municipalities are:
North Denmark Region: Frederikshavn, Jammerbugt, Mariagerfjord, Morsø, and Thisted.
Region of Southern Denmark: Assens, Billund, Esbjerg, Fredericia, Faaborg-Midtfyn, Haderslev, Kolding, Middelfart, Odense, Svendborg, Sønderborg, Tønder, Varde, Vejen, Aabenraa.
The project will be carried out from summer 2020 to the end of March 2025 in collaboration between the Resource Center for Breastfeeding, the University of Copenhagen and primary health care in the Region of Southern Denmark and the North Denmark Region. The project is supported by Nordea-fonden, Det Obelske Familiefond and Novo Nordisk Foundation.
During the 4½ years that the project is running, it will be evaluated both quantitatively in a randomized controlled study and qualitatively via interviews and observations. The evaluation is carried out by two PhD students, who are supervised by a chief consultant, PhD from the Resource Center for Breastfeeding and associate professors from the University of Copenhagen.
