Zainab Yate: Breastfeeding Makes Me Feel Mad, Bad or Sad

Breastfeeding can trigger negative emotions and intrusive thoughts. These can include experiencing the phenomenon of breastfeeding/nursing aversion and agitation or having the medical condition of Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex. Understanding the nuances and variations in all these conditions and symptoms can lead to better referral, intervention, and treatment for those struggling with negative emotions associated with breastfeeding. The information and skills you will gain will particularly help in complex cases or cases where there seems to be a missing link. Zainab Yate BSc, MSc (Medical Ethics & Law, Imperial College London, UK) is a biomedical ethicist, independent researcher, and campaigner.

Lucy Ruddle: Supporting neuro-divergent parents to breastfeed

There has been a surge in Autism and ADHD diagnosis for adults in recent years, alongside other neurodivergent conditions. This is due to an increase in awareness following several generations of underdiagnosis, particularly in women. It is important that as professionals and supporters, we understand the challenges many parents face due to neurodivergence – diagnosed and undiagnosed. Sensory issues alone can make lactation and breastfeeding feel overwhelming. This talk will examine the significant issues caused by underdiagnosis in women and explore how we as lactation workers and volunteers can adjust our practice to be more inclusive for all. Lucy Ruddle is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) Holistic Sleep Coach (HSC), Counsellor, author on the topic of lactation and diplomas in child psychology and child development.
